What the cosmos means

Cosmos are native to Mexico, and Spanish priests are said to have named them for their tidy, evenly spaced petals, from the Greek kosmos, meaning order or harmony. That story gives the flower its modern associations with harmony, balance, and peace. Cosmos reached Europe through the royal botanical garden in Madrid in the late 18th century and became a cottage garden favorite. In the US tradition it is one of October's birth flowers, alongside the marigold. Like most flower meanings, these are traditions rather than fixed rules.
