What the king protea means

The king protea is the national flower of South Africa, and the genus is named for Proteus, the Greek sea god who could change his shape at will, a nod to the remarkable variety of forms in the group. In modern florist use that has made it a symbol of diversity, courage, and transformation, meanings with no deep folk tradition behind them but well suited to its dramatic look. Proteas belong to an ancient plant family with roots in the old southern supercontinent of Gondwana, and most Protea species grow in South Africa.
