The Funnel Chart

A one-page funnel chart that stacks the stages of a sequence — visitors to signups to paid, leads to demos to deals, applicants to hires — and draws each as a band whose width scales to its value, centred on a spine so the whole thing tapers as people fall away. Because every band is measured against the top stage, you read the drop-off as a shape: a gentle slope means most carry through, a sharp pinch shows exactly where you are losing them, no arithmetic required. It beats a column of counts because it does the dividing for you — each stage carries its own value, its share of the top stage in bold, and the step conversion and loss from the stage above in the right rail — so the leak is impossible to miss and easy to talk about. Stages keep the order you type them, since a funnel is a sequence and not a ranking, the bands deepen in colour as they narrow for depth, and an optional unit turns raw counts into dollars of pipeline or percentages. It works best when each stage is a subset of the one before it. Use it for a marketing or signup funnel, a sales pipeline by deal value, a hiring or recruiting funnel, a checkout or onboarding flow, a fundraising ladder, a content or ad funnel, or any drop-off you want to see stage by stage. List a label and a value per line, widest first, and the bands, colours, percentages and drop-offs draw themselves; leave it blank to print an empty funnel and fill it in by hand.
