Goal Thermometer

A one-page Goal Thermometer — the classic fundraising gauge, turned into a visual progress tracker for any countable goal. A number written on a page is easy to ignore; the same number given a rising red column is hard to look away from. This sheet draws a tall graduated tube with a bulb at the bottom and a goal cap at the top. You name the goal in a single line — and, crucially, how you'll count it (dollars saved, pounds lost, miles run, books read, pages written, days done) — then label up to six milestones climbing the tube from just above the bulb to just below the goal. The bulb is where you start; the cap is 100%. Each time you close a little more of the gap, you colour in the mercury up to the mark you've reached, and the filled-in red becomes a progress bar you actually want to grow. Two things make it work. Fixing the milestones in advance turns a vague target into a sequence of near, reachable checkpoints, so momentum comes from passing the next mark rather than staring at the far one. And colouring it in by hand — on a sheet stuck to the fridge, the wall, the studio door — keeps the goal in daily view in a way an app buried on your phone never manages. Use it for savings goals and debt payoff, fitness and weight targets, reading or writing counts, fundraising drives, team quotas, or a kid's chore-and-reward chart. Print it blank to label and colour by hand.

Build your goal thermometer

Step 01

Name the goal.

The target at the top of the tube — and how you'll count it.

Step 02
