Problem Tree
A one-page Problem Tree — the analysis tool that pulls a messy problem apart into its causes and its effects so you stop treating symptoms. You write the core problem as the trunk, then trace upward into the branches (the effects it leads to) and dig downward into the roots (the causes driving it). Laying it out this way makes an important distinction obvious: the effects are what everyone notices and complains about, but the leverage is almost always down in the roots. Fix a root cause and the branches above it wither on their own; patch a branch and the problem grows back. Use it before jumping to solutions on any recurring problem — a team bottleneck, a product complaint, a personal habit that won't stick — and pair it with a few rounds of 'why?' to get past the first, shallow causes. Print it blank to map a problem out by hand.
- Best for
- Separating a recurring problem from its root causes and its effects, so you fix what's driving it instead of the symptoms.
