The Ternary Plot

A one-page ternary plot — the triangle for choices with exactly three ingredients. Each row is one point, and its three numbers are normalised to 100% before being placed inside the field: more of the first component pulls it toward the top corner, more of the second pulls it toward the bottom-left, and more of the third pulls it toward the bottom-right. That makes it ideal for patterns that disappear in a table: months in a 50/30/20 budget, meals across protein/carbs/fat, investments across stocks/bonds/cash, project time across build/review/admin, or weeks split between work/rest/play. Put several points on the same triangle and the cluster tells you the habit immediately — stable near the centre, drifting toward one corner, or scattered because the mix is not under control. Unlike a pie chart, which shows one composition at a time, a ternary plot lets many three-part compositions share one page without multiplying charts. Type three corner names, then list each point as a label and three values; raw amounts and percentages both work because every row scales itself. Leave it blank to print the triangle and mark the points by hand.

Best for
Comparing many three-part mixes at once — budget needs/wants/savings, macros, portfolio splits, or work/rest/play — as points inside one triangular field.

Build your ternary plot

Step 01

Name the mix.

What the three corners represent — a budget split, macro balance, portfolio allocation, or the shape of a week.

Step 02

Set the three corners.

Use three comma-separated names. The first corner is the top, the second is bottom-left, and the third is bottom-right.

Step 03

List each point.

One point per line, up to 16 — a label, then |, then three values. Each row is scaled to its own total, so Month | 50, 30, 20 and Month | 500, 300, 200 land in the same place.

One point per line, like Month | 50, 30, 20 — a label and three positive values.
