The Treemap

A one-page treemap that turns a list of parts into a single rectangle carved into tiles, each sized to its share of the total — so the thing that eats most of your budget, your day, or your disk is simply the biggest box on the page, impossible to argue with. A column of numbers makes you do the maths in your head to see what dominates; the treemap does it for you, laying the parts out largest-first and shading the big ones deeper so your eye lands on them first. Unlike a pie chart it stays readable with many parts and never collapses the small ones into an unlabelled sliver — every tile keeps its name, its value and its percentage right inside it. A squarified layout keeps the tiles close to square rather than thin strips, which is what makes them easy to compare at a glance, and a thin white gutter separates them so the boundaries stay crisp even when printed. Use it for a monthly budget by category, where your 24 hours actually go, a project's effort by workstream, storage by folder, an investment portfolio by holding, headcount by team, or website traffic by source — any whole you want to break into parts and rank by size in one picture. List the parts with a value each and the tiles size, pack, shade and label themselves; leave them blank to print an empty frame and block it out by hand.
