The Recall Notice

A formal notice withdrawing one habit, one rule or one belief from circulation. Every other stop-doing-this sheet is a list of behaviours in columns; this one commits the whole page to a single item, in the register of a product recall, because naming a fault precisely is most of the work of dropping it. Under the masthead the product is printed large — the thing being withdrawn, in its own words, with the date it went into circulation and the date the withdrawal takes effect. Then the defect: what goes wrong every time, not what went wrong once, which is the sentence that separates a recall from a resolution. The tinted hazard panel holds the three situations where the defect does the most damage, because those are the places the replacement actually has to hold. The remedy is numbered, in order, since stopping something and putting nothing in its place is how a recall gets quietly reversed. At the foot, the affected units: who or where got the faulty version — some of them people, some of them your own weeks — each with a box for whether they've been told, and the one figure the sheet works out is how many are still holding it. Two signature lines close it, and the second one matters most: a countersignature is a person allowed to point at this notice when you reach for the product again.
