The Handover Card

The page you leave behind when someone else has to hold the thing you normally hold — your week at work, your keys, your cat, your kids on Thursday. It doesn't print as a sheet: it prints as six panels with fold rules between them, so it folds twice into something that stands on a fridge door instead of getting lost halfway up a text thread. The panels run in the order a handover actually goes. What normal looks like, so they don't read ordinary things as emergencies. The day in order, with the times nobody could guess. Then the shaded panel the whole card exists for — if this happens, do this — with each trigger printed bold and the instruction underneath, because someone reading it has already got a problem and is scanning for the situation, not the prose. Then what they're allowed to ignore, which is the panel that prevents most of the calls you'd otherwise get. Then who to ring, numbered in the order you'd try them, and a short strip for the things that can simply wait until you're back. The cover counts how many of your what-ifs actually have an answer beside them, because a trigger with nothing after it just worries the person holding the card.

Build your handover card

Step 01 · The cover

Who's holding it, and for how long.

Step 02 · How it usually goes

What normal looks like, and the shape of the day.

Step 03 · The shaded panel

If this happens, do this.

Each one prints as "If trigger" in bold, with your instruction beneath it.

Step 04 · Who to call

In the order you'd try them.

Numbered on the card, so it's clear who to try first. Nothing you type is saved.

Step 05 · Print

Paper and download.

Start with the day, in order — the times someone else would have no way of guessing.
