The Promise Book

A cheque book for the things you said you would do for other people. The page doesn't print as a list — it prints as five wide slips stacked down the sheet, each cut by a perforation into a counterfoil you keep and a slip you can tear off and hand to the person you promised, with the same reference number on both halves so the two still match after the tear. You write the promise once, in the words you'd actually say, along with who it was made to, by when, and the day you made it. Write them in the order you made them and the book does the rest: it numbers each slip, counts what is still open, and names the oldest promise still sitting in the book by reference and recipient, because age is the thing a promise hides better than anything else about it. The register at the foot is for what you actually delivered — deliberately smaller than the book above it, which is the honest proportion for most of us. The Delivered box on each stub stays empty on the printed page, because ticking it is something you do off the page, on the day, when the thing is finally done.

Best for
Keeping an honest record of what you've promised other people, and seeing which one has been waiting longest.

Build your promise book

Step 01 · The book

Whose book it is, and when you'll look at it.

Step 02 · The slips

What you said you'd do, and to whom.

Oldest first. The last two parts are optional, but a promise with no name and no date is a wish written in the second person.

Step 03 · The register

What you actually delivered.

Prints smaller than the book above it, which is the honest proportion. Nothing you type is saved.

Step 04 · Print

Paper and download.

Write the promises in the order you made them — oldest at the top, where you'll have to look at it.
