Open When letters

Write someone a bundle of letters for the days they will need them: open when you miss me, open when you can’t sleep, open when it finally happens. They arrive as sealed envelopes in one link, and each opens once, when the day calls for it.

  • Up to 12 letters in one bundle
  • Free, no account to start
  • Opens in any browser

Written now, opened when it matters

The studio is a quiet page: your letters down the middle, the bundle they will receive beside it.

  1. Write

Each letter is an “open when” and a few paragraphs in your own voice. Start from a set, or from nothing. Your draft waits in this browser.

  2. Seal

Give any letter a date and it stays sealed until that day, on the server, not just on the page. The rest open whenever they are needed.

  3. Send the link

You get a private gift link to text or email. Signed in, you can pick a date and a time, and HourLife emails it to them then.

Made to be kind

  • The words stay in the envelope

The gift page arrives with the envelopes only. A letter’s words are fetched the moment its seal is tapped, so a link preview, a chat app or a curious glance sees none of them.

  • Opened once, remembered everywhere

A letter opened on a phone shows as opened on a laptop. You can see which have been opened from your share page; you never see when they were read it aloud.

  • Dated letters wait

A letter sealed until a date is refused by the server before that date, in the recipient’s own time zone. There is no peeking at tomorrow’s letter today.

  • Sent means sent

A bundle never changes after you send it. Make another one like it in a tap, and your draft waits in this browser until you are ready.

Questions

  • What are Open When letters?

A set of letters, each marked with the moment to open it. Open when you miss me. Open when you can’t sleep. Open on your first day. They used to be paper envelopes in a shoebox; here they are one link, and each letter stays sealed until the person opens it.

  • Does the person I send them to need an app or an account?

No. The link opens in any browser. They see the bundle of sealed letters with their “open when” lines, and tap the one that fits the day.

  • Can a letter really stay sealed?

Yes. A letter’s words are not in the page until it is opened. The page asks for them when they tap, and the request is refused before a letter’s date. A letter with no date opens whenever they choose.

  • Can I set a date, like a birthday?

Yes. Give a letter a date and it stays sealed until that day, by your calendar. The others open whenever they are needed.

  • Will I know when a letter is opened?

Yes. Your share page shows which letters have been opened and when, without the words. Opening them yourself does not count.

  • Can I change the letters after I send them?

No. A sent set stays as it was sent, which is the point of a sealed letter. You can start a copy to make a new set, or delete the original so its link stops opening.

  • Is it free?

Yes, and you can write a set without an account. Signing in lets HourLife email the link on a date you choose, and keeps your sets in one place.

Someone will need a letter from you one day

Write it now, while you know what to say. It takes about twenty minutes, and it costs nothing to send.

Keep this going in the app.
