Someday · Planning · Free
Park the idea. Meet it again once a month.
A parking lot for ideas you're not ready to act on. Review it monthly and turn the ones that last into goals, tasks, or desires.
-
Ideas that show their ageEvery card carries a ring mark and its age, in days, then weeks, then months. It turns gold after a month and coral after three.
-
One review a monthWhen the last review is more than 30 days old, a “Monthly review due” banner appears. “Review now” goes through every idea, one card at a time.
-
Keep, convert, defer or deleteAn idea can stay, become a Goal, Task or Life Desire, wait for a revisit month, or be let go. Insights keeps count of what your reviews decide.
Your first someday idea
-
Tap “+”
Under “IDEA”, finish the sentence “Someday I might…”. The hint says it best: “Don't edit — capture.”
-
Add why, if you know
The note asks “What made you think of this? Why now?”. Months later, it is usually what helps you decide.
-
Link it, and tap “Save”
Under “LINK TO”, a project makes it a Project idea and a life area makes it a Life idea. With neither, it is Other.
Every step, in detail
- 1 Tap "+" and finish the sentence "Someday I might…".
- 2 Optionally link it under "Link to" to a life area, person, goal, or project.
- 3 Add a note on what made you think of it, and a "Revisit date" if you want one, then tap "Save".
- 4 When the "Monthly review due" banner appears, tap "Review now".
Six ideas, over six months
Drag the day forward and watch the ideas age: a ring at one month, another at three and at six, gold and then coral. Thirty days after the last review the banner comes back, and “Review now” runs the review right here.
Sample · six ideas on the list, four already resolved, reviewed on Jul 28 and Aug 31
The day
Tue, Oct 20
Every idea on the list, by days waiting
Insights
The day only moves forward; Reset goes back to October 20. “Try a month of coworking” was deferred in the August review, so its card still says “Revisit Sep 2026” although September has passed: the date is a label, and nothing happens on it. Convert here goes straight through, as “Auto-save” does.
An idea keeps its years
The mark beside each idea’s age is a tree’s cross-section: one ring when it is fresh, and another at a month, at three months and at six. Only the outermost ring takes the colour.
- Fresh Under 30 days, told in days. No colour yet.
- 1 mo+ Gold, and the age is now told in weeks.
- 3 mo+ Coral. Today’s Someday card and Insights’ 90-day line count it as aging.
- 6 mo+ Coral, and the card’s border gets stronger.
How the age is told
- 9 days on the list → 9 days
- 36 days on the list → 5 weeks
- 64 days on the list → 9 weeks
- 118 days on the list → 3 months
- 201 days on the list → 6 months
Days until 30, whole weeks until 90, then whole months of 30 days. The six sample ideas sit in the ring for their age, on October 20.
How ideas get on, and how they leave
Ideas arrive from four places and leave in three ways. You never choose a category: Someday works it out from what you link.
In
- “+” on Someday“Someday I might…”, with a note, a revisit date and links, all optional.
- Tasks“Move to Someday” in a task’s menu and in the task review.
- Brain“Someday” when you process a capture, which “Moves out of Brain”.
- LearningThe “Someday / Maybe” toggle on a learning capture, unless the capture also goes to the inbox.
Someday / Maybe
| Linked to a project | Project |
|---|---|
| Has a life area | Life |
| Anything else | Other, a person or goal link included |
A task moved here is Project when it had a project. The chips also list Skill, Creative and Business, which only the app’s sample ideas carry.
Out
- Goal, Task or Life DesireFrom the review’s “Convert” or the idea’s “WHAT NOW?”. It leaves the list and counts as resolved.
- Delete in a review or WHAT NOW?Releases the idea: it leaves the list, and Insights counts it under “Released”.
- ⋯ › ArchiveMoves it to “Archived”, out of the list and of every count.
- ⋯ › DeleteGone for good, after “Delete this item?” and “This can't be undone.”
Keep and Defer leave an idea where it is. Defer only adds the “Revisit” month to the card, and its sheet starts a month ahead with “Today”, “Tomorrow”, “This Weekend” and “Next Week” above a calendar.
The review, and what Insights keeps
The review takes every active idea, newest first. ⏩ keeps the idea and moves on, and the checkmark ends the review early and still counts it. Insights, from the ⋯ menu, adds a Backlog card, CONTEXT (how many ideas link to a goal, project, person or life area) and your five OLDEST ACTIVE ideas.
Settings
“Monthly review banner” and “Age legend” are on at first. “Confirm before delete” asks before a review releases an idea, and is off. Under CAPTURE, “Auto-save” converts an idea at once and “Show create flow” opens the goal, task or desire form first.
Tips
- Write the idea as you'd say it. The form's own hint is "Finish the sentence. Don't edit — capture."
- Note why it came up. When you meet it again months later, the note is usually what helps you decide.
- If a card has turned coral, the review is a good time to delete it or convert it.
Questions
About Someday day to day.
-
When is the monthly review due?
When you have ideas on the list and have never reviewed it, or when the last review was more than 30 days ago. Finishing a review, even early with the checkmark, clears the banner for 30 days.
-
What do the colours and rings mean?
The mark gains a ring at one, three and six months. The age turns gold after 30 days and coral after 90, and after 180 days the card's coral border gets stronger.
-
Will I be reminded on the revisit date?
No. The date shows on the card as “Revisit” and the month, and nothing else reads it. The idea comes up in the next monthly review like every other one.
-
Does “Delete” in a review erase the idea?
No. It releases the idea, which leaves the list and counts under “Released” in Insights. The permanent delete is in the idea's ⋯ menu, and it asks first.
-
What happens to an idea I convert?
It becomes a Goal, a Task or a Life Desire and leaves the list. With “Show create flow” chosen in Settings, the goal, task or desire form opens first so you can fill it in.
-
Can tasks and Brain captures go to Someday?
Yes. A task has “Move to Someday” in its menu and in the task review, Brain offers “Someday” when you process a capture, and a learning capture has a “Someday / Maybe” toggle.
Works with
Where Someday hands off to the rest of HourLife.
-
Tasks
A task's detail menu and the task review both have "Move to Someday", and an idea can become a task with "Task".
-
Goals
"Goal" turns an idea into a goal, and you can link an idea to an existing goal when you add it.
-
Desires
"Life Desire" moves an idea into Desires, for things you want to experience rather than plan.
-
Brain
When you process a capture in Brain, "Someday" moves it out of your inbox and onto this list.
-
Learning
When you add a learning capture, a "Someday / Maybe" toggle saves it here as well.
-
Compass
Compass's reviews include a "Someday / Maybe" review that shows how many items are waiting to be considered.
-
Today
The "Someday" card, off until you add it, reads "N active · N aging", counting ideas 90 days old or more.
